Denis Krief studied music in Paris and trained in the Italian school of direction,
paying close attention to German opera houses and prizing, in particular, the
stage design of Russian theatre. Musician and man of the theatre, he
distinguishes himself by the originality and depth of his knowledge of the
repertoire, be it classical or contemporary. Italian musical critics have underlined
the importance of Denis Krief’s work by awarding him the “Abbiati” Prize 2000
for his productions of Turandot (by both Puccini and Busoni), Carmen and Lucia di
Lammermoor.

"As a director I wonder how you can disguise the death to the eyes and ears of the public, to keep up to the end the last surprise, because the surprise is not like the suspense. The surprise is when a bomb explodes under a table and we do not expect it. The suspense is when we have seen someone placing the bomb under the table, and we follow the conversation of the people who do not know what will happen after a few moments ... "
